A mod wheel is a wheel or lever on a keyboard that sends a continuous modulation control, usually as MIDI CC 1. Unlike a pitch bend wheel, it stays where you leave it.
It is often used to add vibrato or to open a filter, and a MIDI to CV module can turn it into a control voltage for anything in the patch.
