Modulation

Modulation is the use of one signal to change a parameter of another. A common example is an LFO changing the cutoff of a filter, so the sound sweeps over time.

The signal doing the changing is the modulation source, and the parameter being changed is the destination. Modulation is what gives a patch movement, since a held note with no modulation stays the same.
