Self-oscillation happens when a filter’s resonance is turned up high enough that the filter sustains a tone with no input signal. The tone is usually a sine wave at the cutoff frequency, so the filter works as an oscillator whose pitch can be controlled by CV.
Many filters can be tuned to track 1V/oct while self-oscillating, which lets them play melodies or act as sine sources.
