A sine wave is a smooth, rounded waveform that contains a single frequency and no harmonics. It sounds pure and flute-like, and it is the building block of other waveforms, since any periodic waveform can be built from sine waves.
Sine waves are used for sub bass, as modulators for FM, as smooth LFO shapes, and as the starting point in west coast synthesis, where harmonics are added later.
