Resonance is the emphasis of frequencies near a filter’s cutoff point. It boosts frequencies at or around the cutoff, creating a sharper, more pronounced peak in the sound.
Examples
- A low pass filter with high resonance can create a whistling or vocal-like quality, especially when modulated.
- A band pass filter with resonance can isolate and amplify a narrow frequency range, which is useful for emphasizing harmonics or creating sweeps.
- At extreme settings, resonance can push the filter into self-oscillation, where it generates a sine wave at the cutoff frequency and works as a tone generator.
