Cutoff frequency

The cutoff frequency is the point at which a filter begins to reduce the signal. It is conventionally the frequency at which the output has fallen by 3 dB from the level in the passband.

In a low pass filter, frequencies above the cutoff are reduced, and in a high pass filter, frequencies below it are. Sweeping the cutoff with an envelope or LFO is one of the most common ways to shape a sound in synthesis.
