Phase distortion is a synthesis technique that changes the shape of a waveform by speeding up and slowing down how fast it reads through its cycle. Starting with a sine wave, it can create shapes resembling saws, squares, and resonant filter sweeps.
It is best known from Casio’s CZ series of synthesizers in the 1980s. Some digital modules and oscillators offer similar controls.
