A sawtooth wave rises steadily and then drops back sharply, like the teeth of a saw. It contains every harmonic, at falling strength, which makes it bright and buzzy and a classic starting point for subtractive synthesis.
Run through a filter, it can sound like brass, strings, or leads. A reversed sawtooth is called a ramp wave, and the two sound almost identical.
