Microtonal describes music that uses intervals smaller than a semitone, or scales other than the usual twelve notes per octave. Because pitch in a modular is a continuous voltage, it handles microtonal tuning easily, and many quantizers can load custom scales.
It opens up scales from other musical traditions and tunings with more or fewer than twelve notes.
