A semitone, or half step, is the smallest interval in Western music, equal to one twelfth of an octave. Adjacent keys on a piano, including black keys, are a semitone apart.
On a 1V/oct system, a semitone is 1/12 of a volt, about 83 mV. Quantizers snap voltages to the nearest allowed semitone step in a chosen scale.
