Comparator

A comparator is a module or circuit that compares an input signal to a set threshold and outputs a signal based on whether the input is above or below it. Comparators create gates, triggers, and other binary signals from continuous inputs.

  • Threshold comparison: If the input rises above the threshold, the comparator outputs a high voltage (for example 5 V). If not, it outputs a low voltage (for example 0 V).
  • Wave shaping: A comparator can turn a waveform into a square wave by outputting high whenever the input is above the threshold.
  • Logic control: In a patch, a comparator can act as a decision maker, triggering envelopes or events based on incoming CV or audio.

Comparators are the usual way to turn a continuous signal into gates and triggers.
