Waveshaping changes the shape of a waveform by passing it through a circuit or function that maps input levels to different output levels. A sine wave sent through a waveshaper can come out with many added harmonics, depending on the curve.
Wavefolders, clippers, and rectifiers are all waveshapers. It is a key tool in west coast synthesis, where it adds harmonic content to simple waveforms.
