Sidebands are frequencies that appear above and below the carrier when one signal modulates another. In ring modulation, the sidebands are the sum and difference of the two input frequencies.
In FM, many sidebands appear, spaced apart by the modulator’s frequency, and more appear as the modulation depth rises. Sidebands are what turn a plain waveform into a bright, metallic, or bell-like tone.
