Modulation depth is how strongly a modulation signal affects its destination. A shallow depth gives a subtle change, and a deep setting gives a dramatic one.
Depth is usually set with an attenuator or attenuverter on the destination, or with a level control on the modulation source. In FM, depth decides how many sidebands appear and how bright the sound gets.
