Filter FM

Filter FM is the use of an audio rate signal, such as an oscillator, to modulate a filter’s cutoff frequency. When the modulation speeds up into audio range, it creates new frequencies, much like FM synthesis, which gives sounds a gritty, metallic, or vocal edge.

A filter with an FM input and a stable cutoff response works best for this. Self-oscillating filters can also act as FM sources.
