Equalizer

An equalizer (EQ) is a device or module that adjusts the balance of frequencies in an audio signal. It can boost, cut, or shape specific frequency ranges to refine tone, clarity, or character.

  • Graphic equalizer: Divides the audio spectrum into fixed bands, each with a slider or knob to set its level.
  • Parametric equalizer: Offers more precision, with control over the center frequency, bandwidth (Q), and gain of each band.

Common uses include:

  • Shaping a mix by boosting bass, reducing harsh mids, or brightening treble.
  • Removing unwanted frequencies, such as hums and resonances.
  • Sculpting sounds creatively, such as emphasizing a vocal’s clarity or adding warmth to a pad.

Equalizers are used in mixing, mastering, and sound design to control the tonal balance of any audio signal.
