Gain is the amount by which a signal is increased or decreased. A gain above one makes a signal larger, and a gain below one makes it smaller. It is commonly measured in decibels (dB).
In a modular system, VCAs, mixers, attenuators, and amplifiers all adjust gain, and managing it well keeps signals strong enough to be clean without clipping.
