Detune is a small difference in pitch between two or more oscillators that are meant to play the same note. The slight mismatch makes the waves go in and out of phase, creating beating and a wider, thicker sound.
A few cents of detune adds richness. Larger amounts sound out of tune or produce intervals, such as a fifth or an octave.
