A rectifier is a circuit that removes or flips the negative half of a signal. A half wave rectifier blocks the negative half, and a full wave rectifier flips it so the whole signal is positive.
Rectifying a sine wave adds harmonics, and a full wave rectified sine sounds an octave higher with a different character. Rectifiers also turn bipolar CV into unipolar CV.
