A phaser is an effect that mixes a signal with a copy that has been shifted in phase by a chain of allpass filters. The mix cancels certain frequencies, creating notches that sweep up and down when an LFO moves the filters.
More stages create more notches and a deeper effect. Phasers sound smoother and less metallic than flangers because their notches are not evenly spaced.
