The noise floor is the constant, low level of noise a circuit or system produces even when nothing is playing. It sets the quietest signal that can be heard clearly, and the gap between it and the loudest signal is the dynamic range.
Poor power supplies, long cable runs, and digital modules can raise the noise floor of a modular system.
