Dynamic range

Dynamic range is the span between the quietest and the loudest signal a system can handle, usually measured in decibels. The noise floor sets the bottom, and clipping sets the top.

A compressor reduces a signal’s dynamic range by turning down its loud parts, and a VCA with an envelope adds dynamics by shaping a sound’s level over time.
