Just intonation is a tuning system in which intervals are built from simple whole number ratios of frequencies, such as 3:2 for a perfect fifth and 5:4 for a major third. These intervals sound very pure and do not beat, but the system works well in only one key at a time.
Equal temperament compromises by slightly adjusting every interval. Just intonation is often explored on modulars through custom quantizer scales.
