A formant filter is a filter built to create the resonant peaks, called formants, that define vowel sounds in human speech. It usually combines several band pass filters tuned to positions that resemble vowels such as A, E, I, O, and U.
Moving between them with a knob or CV makes sounds seem to speak or sing. It works best on harmonically rich signals such as sawtooth waves.
