White noise is random noise with equal energy at every frequency, which gives it a flat spectrum (0 dB per octave). Because each octave covers twice the bandwidth of the one below it, the highs dominate what we hear, giving white noise its bright hiss, like static or rushing air. In a modular system, it is a staple for snares, hi-hats, and other percussion, wind and surf textures, and as the raw source for sample and hold random voltages.
