Additive synthesis

Additive synthesis builds a sound by adding many sine waves, called partials, each with its own frequency and level. Controlling the strength of each partial over time lets you shape the timbre in detail. Any periodic sound can in theory be built this way.

It takes many oscillators to do properly, so it is more common in digital synthesizers than in modular hardware, though some modules offer banks of harmonics.
