Sync, short for synchronization, is keeping several devices running at the same tempo and in time with each other. In a modular setup, a clock generator sends pulses to sequencers, drum modules, and dividers so they all follow the same timing.
Sync can also come from MIDI clock or from an external device such as a drum machine. Oscillator sync is a different thing, in which one oscillator forces another to restart its cycle.
