A slew limiter limits how fast a voltage can rise or fall. Fed a stepped signal, such as a sequencer’s pitch output, it turns the jumps into smooth glides. Fed a gate, it creates a simple attack and release.
Many slew limiters have separate rise and fall controls, and some are voltage controlled. They are also called lag processors, and function generators can work as slew limiters.
