A shift register is a series of memory stages that pass a value along to the next on each clock pulse. In a modular, an analog shift register holds voltages instead of simple on or off values.
When the register samples new values and shifts them along, it creates sequences that evolve while repeating. Some modules, such as the Turing Machine, loop the values in a shift register and randomly change some of them to generate melodies that slowly shift.
