Send and return is a routing method in which a mixer sends a portion of a signal to an external effect and then receives the processed signal back. Several channels can share one effect, and each channel controls how much it sends.
In a modular, this is usually done with a mixer that has send and return jacks, or with a patch that mixes the returned signal into an output.
