Saturation

Saturation is a gradual flattening of a signal’s peaks as it approaches a circuit’s limit. Unlike hard clipping, it rounds the waveform, which adds harmonics and makes a sound feel denser.

Tubes, transformers, and tape are known for it, and many modules and software plugins imitate it. At low settings it adds subtle thickness, and at high settings it becomes distortion.
