Retriggering restarts an envelope, sample, or other event from the beginning each time a new trigger or gate arrives, even if it is still running. Most envelope generators retrigger on each gate, which gives each note its own attack.
Some can be set not to retrigger, or to restart from their current level instead of zero, which is smoother for fast passages.
