Polymeter

A polymeter happens when patterns of different lengths play at the same tempo. For example, a five step pattern and a four step pattern repeat together, and they only line up again after twenty steps.

The result shifts constantly while staying locked to the same pulse. Polymeter differs from polyrhythm, where the underlying pulse itself is divided differently.
