Granular synthesis breaks a sound into very short pieces, called grains, usually between a few milliseconds and a few hundred milliseconds long, and plays them back in large numbers. Controls for grain size, density, position, and pitch let you build clouds, freeze or stretch a sound in time, or create textures that do not resemble the source.
Granular modules and effects are common in Eurorack, and they work with live input or recorded samples.
