The fundamental is the lowest frequency of a periodic waveform, often called the base frequency. It sets the pitch, or note, of the sound. In a harmonic sound, all the other frequencies (harmonics) are whole-number multiples of it. In physics and music, the fundamental is the core vibration around which additional tones, called partials, build a richer structure.
