Encoder

An encoder, short for rotary encoder, is a knob that turns continuously in either direction without stopping. It sends a stream of pulses instead of a voltage, so the module can count steps and know the direction.

Encoders are often used for menus and for parameters that can be changed by a digital processor. Some have a push switch as well.
