Ground loop

A ground loop forms when two or more pieces of equipment connect to ground by more than one path. The extra path picks up interference, usually as a low hum or buzz at mains frequency in the audio.

Ground loops are common when a modular system connects to a mixer or interface that is powered from a different outlet. Balanced connections, a DI box, a ground isolator, or powering everything from the same strip often fix it.
