A flip-flop is a logic circuit that holds a state, high or low, and changes it each time it receives a trigger. Because it flips on every other event, it halves the rate of a clock, which makes it a basic clock divider by two.
Flip-flops are also used to toggle something on and off with a button or trigger, or to alternate between two destinations.
