Aliasing is a digital artifact that happens when a signal contains frequencies above half the sample rate. Those frequencies cannot be represented, so they fold back as unrelated lower tones that are not harmonically related to the original sound.
Aliasing can sound harsh and inharmonic. Well-designed digital oscillators and effects reduce it, while some players use it deliberately for a rough character.
