Resonance

The amplification or emphasis of frequencies near the cutoff point of a filter. Resonance boosts frequencies at or around the cutoff, creating a sharper, more pronounced peak in the sound.

Examples:

  • A low-pass filter with high resonance can create a whistling or vocal-like quality, especially when modulated.
  • A band-pass filter with resonance can isolate and amplify specific frequency ranges, making it useful for accentuating harmonics or creating sweeps.
  • Extreme resonance settings can drive the filter into self-oscillation, where it generates a sine wave at the cutoff frequency, effectively turning the filter into a tone generator.
