FAQ
Whether you’re new to modular or you’ve been twisting knobs for years, here are answers to the questions we hear most. Can’t find yours? Ask us on the contact page.
Knobulism is a modular synth blog for people who like to patch, tweak, and learn. We keep synthesis approachable, practical, and fun, whether you’re patching hardware or software.
Start with the Guides section for the basics of synthesis and gear, plus setup and workflow help, one step at a time. Or start with one of these:
Here’s the lineup:
- Patchable: Step-by-step tutorials with patch diagrams, from basic to advanced.
- Guides: Practical guides for modular musicians, from buying gear and building a rig to mixing, jamming, and playing shows, plus beginner basics.
- Reviews: Honest reviews of new and classic modules and synths.
- Culture: Interviews, event recaps, personal takes, and stories about the people and ideas behind synth culture.
- Glossary: Plain-language definitions of synthesis terms and concepts.
Mostly hardware modular, but synths, music software, and other gear are all fair game. We love just about anything that makes noise or helps make it.
Every bit helps keep the content flowing:
- Share: Pass along what you like to friends and fellow synth nerds. Word of mouth keeps us going.
- Affiliate links: Buying gear? Shop through our links at Perfect Circuit and Signal Sounds. Same price for you, small kickback for us.
- Support us on Ko-fi: Leave a one-time tip, or join from $3 a month for perks like a supporters page listing and a Patchable post on a topic you request.
We review new and classic gear readers will care about: modules that do something different, solve a real problem, or have earned a spot in a lot of racks. Got a suggestion? Send it our way.
No, none of our content is sponsored, and if that ever changes we’ll clearly label it. We do use affiliate links, which just help cover costs.
Yes! Got an opinion, a bit of synth history, or a music review you want to share? Pitch us your idea with a topic and a rough outline.
If you perform live with modular, we’d like to hear from you. Artist spotlights live in Culture. We’ll send you a few questions once you reach out on the contact page.
